PROVIDENCE, Guyana (CMC):

West Indies put Friday's boo-boo by their coach behind them to win the second of five one-day internationals against England by 21 runs yesterday after Shivanrine Chanderpaul's 10th ODI hundred set things up.

West Indies successfully defended a target of 265 when they dismissed England for 243 with 10 balls to spare at the Guyana National Stadium.

Kieron Pollard formalised the result when James Anderson swung across the line of a slower ball and was bowled for eight.

The result means that the series is now level 1-1 with the next two ODIs set for Friday and Sunday at Kensington Oval in Barbados, and the final match for April 3 at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.

West Indies lost the opening match by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis Method, following a miscalculation of the target score by their coach John Dyson.

There, however, was no miscalculation after Chanderpaul delighted the biggest crowd that has watched an ODI in Guyana when he scored an undefeated 112 from 134 balls to help West Indies reach 264 for eight from their 50 overs.

Chanderpaul reached his hundred from 126 balls when he nudged a delivery from Paul Collingwood into midwicket for a single.

He added 133 from 177 balls for the third wicket with compatriot Ramnaresh Sarwan to give West Indies a boost in the middle overs after they slid to 24 for two in the sixth over.

Caught at deep mid-off

Sarwan hit 74 from 89 balls before he was caught at deep mid-off off James Anderson in the 35th over.

No other West Indies batsman could match their effort and the home team could only muster 57 runs from the last 10 overs for the loss of Bravo for 19, Denesh Ramdin for one, Sammy for 11 and Nikita Miller for a duck.

Anderson was the pick of the England bowlers with three wickets for 37 runs from nine overs, Paul Collingwood captured three for 49 from 10 overs and Mascarenhas snared two for 53 from 10 overs.

West Indies then bowled steadily, if not menacingly, and snared wickets at regular intervals, although Andrew Strauss completed his third ODI hundred of 105 from 129 balls.
