Be guided by morals

The Editor, Sir:

I do not believe or subscribe to the belief that abortion should be legalised on a wholesale basis.

Yes, there are cases which, in our human estimation, it would not be safe for a mother to carry her pregnancy to full term due to ill health; or cases where a child was conceived in the most inhumane circumstances such as rape and incest.

However, this is my belief: God is the giver of life and He has a plan for every human being who graces the face of this earth. God can turn around any and every circumstance, no matter how ugly, devastating or demeaning.

Circumstances

Many are the stories of mothers, who were told by their doctors that they should not have another child.

They conceived, brought forth the child and today that child is a feather in their cap, a positive contributor to the good of society, a nation and even world builder.

Children have been conceived through rape or other traumatic circumstances. The mother chose or was forced to carry the child to term, but, in the end, said the child turned out to be the only child the mother ever had, a feather in her cap.

No one knows what a child will become, only God. The circum-stances of conception may have been earth or mind-shattering, but with help and determination that child can be reared to be a blessing.

It matters not whether a foetus is one hour or six weeks old, once conception takes place that foetus is a life that has been started and, if allowed to continue, is destined for greatness.

Arguments For

Some of the points put forward by pro-abortionists include:

  • Women living in dire poverty having children they cannot afford

I say tell them to 'tie off' or use one of the many forms of contraception - stop having children they can't afford, be masters of their own circumstances, but don't conceive the children and kill them!

  • Students in school want to finish their education, but engage in sexual encounters, find themselves pregnant

Tell them to think about their goals first, concentrate on their lessons and leave sex for later, but if you go ahead and get pregnant don't kill the child, have it!

Many women have aborted a pregnancy for reasons such as:

Not wanting to lower their status by bringing a child out of wedlock.

Not wanting to lose favour with their church, parents, and others.

Not wanting to interfere with their studies, or plans for the future.

Abortion should not be made legal for all and sundry. If for reasons such as rape, incest, sexual abuse, child molestation, and ill-health, a mother wishes to terminate a pregnancy, then the choice should be hers and hers alone.

In those circumstances, I do believe there should be a safe and legal opportunity for her to do so but it should only be done after much counselling, much thought and prayer, and a careful examination of the options available, for example, giving up the child for adoption.

    Less emotions

The 'Sistren' production in Parliament a few days ago seems to have captured the emotions of some. However, let us not be swayed by emotions. Let us be guided by what is morally right and by the Word of God!
