Focus on values, not academics
Published: Wednesday | March 25, 2009
A letter writer in The Gleaner of March 24 suggests that a good school is one which provides optimum academic opportunities.
Another writer suggests that we place more counsellors in schools to address children with behaviour problems.
Alas! Until we understand and accept that the end of education is not knowledge but character, the above cycle will forever continue.
The philosophical change that is necessary is to develop the spiritual, as well as the intellectual, faculties in the student!
New philosophy
Education is for life and not just making a living. Singular focus on academic achievement will result in academic heroes and community zeroes!
Perhaps what is needed is to have a stakeholder's conference on the impact of integrating values in the school curriculum, as a means to achieve a consensus.
The Sai Institute of Education WI is willing to participate and illustrate successes in the application of this new philosophy of education in several countries.
