Dr Paul Golding, lecturer, School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) at the University of Technology is one of 20 academics worldwide invited to be a committee member for the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, to study and initiate an AIS-branded student chapter.

The AIS is the premier global organisation for academics, specialising in information systems.

The goal of the committee is to form a core founding group of universities worldwide; these universities will also likely become regional leaders in promoting and hosting AIS-sponsored activities.

Strategic direction

The committee will produce a draft constitution, governance model and strategic direction for the AIS student chapter initiative. The student chapters will serve to introduce new students to the profession, enhance education by providing fora to discuss relevant issues, provide a way to identify with the profession, and engage in professional activities.

Chapters promote communication among students, faculty and industry leaders and ultimately develop leaders for tomorrow.

The SCIT is, therefore, poised to become a regional hub for the AIS and will be among the first in the world to have a student chapter.

A student committee has already been formed in the school and one student leader along with Golding is expected to attend the first AIS Student Chapter Conference from April 3-4, at Temple University in Philadelphia.

The specific purposes of AIS are to:

Create and maintain a professional identity for IS educators, researchers and professionals.

Promote communications and interaction among members.

Provide a focal point for contact and relations with bodies in government, the private sector, and in education that influence and/or control the nature of information systems.

Improve curricula, pedagogy and other aspects of IS education.

Create a vision for the future of the IS field and profession.

Create and implement a modern, technologically sophisticated and professional society.

Establish standards of practice, ethics and education where appropriate.

Include professionals worldwide.

Stimulate research

To these ends, AIS intends to conduct meetings, to publish books, journals, and other materials; to cooperate with other organisations interested in the advancement and practice of information systems, to stimulate research; to promote high professional standards and in general, to promote the growth of information systems, and to improve the profession's quality throughout the world.
