Former National Security Minister Dwight Nelson this morning told the West Kingston Enquiry that he regretted the loss of life during the 2010 police-military operation on West Kingston.

Nelson says he thinks every Jamaican should regret the incident.

An interim report from the Office of the Public Defender concluded that 76 civilians and one member of the Jamaica Defence Force were killed in the operation.

Under cross examination this morning, Nelson conceded that he got no assurance for the security forces as to whether they would identify criminals as opposed to law-abiding citizens.

He reiterated that Owen Ellington, who was the police commissioner at the time, did not bring to his attention any report of unlawful activities committed by the police during the Tivoli operation.

However, Nelson said this did not mean that unlawful acts did not happen.

The West Kingston Commission of Enquiry is probing the circumstances that led to the deaths and destruction of property in West Kingston.
