The St James police say 18 guns and more than 140 assorted rounds of ammunition have been recovered since the start of the year.

The cops reached the 18 mark this weekend when they recovered a Beretta 9-millimetre pistol and one Sig Sauer 9-millimetre pistol, as well as 18 rounds of ammunition during an operation in Tangle River, St James on Friday.

Two men were taken into custody in connection with the seizure. Their identities are being withheld at this time.

Operations officer for the St James Division, Superintendent Gary Francis, says the search for illegal weapons is important to the police's murder reduction programme for 2015.

And the police say two men wanted for murder and gun related incidents were also arrested on Friday. Their names have also not been released.
