Excessive sledging at the World Cup will see players fined or banned as part of an International Cricket Council (ICC) crackdown on poor behaviour.

The tournament, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand, is set begin on Friday.

ICC's chief David Richardson says the penalties will be a bit more serious than before.

He says for a first offence, players will end up with a fine and will have to hand back most of their match fees.

According Richardson, a repeat offence will be punished with a suspension.

Richardson further says the ICC has already been acting to combat bad behaviour by players.
