The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the St Elizabeth Health Department, has brought court action against a truck driver concerning breaches of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act and the Public Health Act.

The man was arrested on Sunday, and will appear in the Black River Resident Magistrate's Court on September 28.

On Sunday, a NEPA bird-shooting monitoring team, along with two members of the Island Special Constabulary Force, was travelling in a private motor vehicle along the Slipe to Lacovia main road in St Elizabeth. Upon reaching the Cashoo Park vicinity, a blue cesspool truck was seen parked across the roadway, with its rear end backed into nearby bushes. After initially attempting to allow the vehicle passage, the driver of the cesspool truck instead drove off in the opposite direction. The team observed a black liquid substance flowing from a pipe valve attached to the tank of the truck.

The truck was chased for approximately 400 metres. After being questioned by the police, the truck driver was arrested and charged. The truck was seized and taken to the Black River Police Station.

NEPA is reminding the public that it will bring the full weight of the law to bear on any individual or entity implicated in the illegal dumping of any sewage or trade effluent or any poisonous, noxious or polluting matter into the environment.
