Side strain bowls over Miller

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

West Indies have replaced one left-arm spin bowler with another for the fifth and final one-day international against England on Friday at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.

A side strain has sidelined Nikita Miller and Sulieman Benn has come into the 13-member squad for the decider.

There has been great debate about the choice of Miller ahead of Benn for the ODIs, since he is not the preferred choice in the Twenty20 version of the game for West Indies.

It's hard to accurately judge the two lefties on the basis of their numbers, as Benn has only appeared in four ODIs and Miller 15.

It would appear, however, the West Indies selectors believe Miller offers them a far steadier option all-round in the 50 over-a-side format, particularly in the outfield, where he seems far more athletic than the beanpole Benn.

For the moment, Benn has the opportunity - if selected - to erase from the minds of the selectors that he can be a liability in the field, if not with the bat and the ball.

A viable option

But Benn may miss out on playing either through team selection with Ravi Rampaul, a viable option to boost the bowling attack, or he and the rest of the side carrying out their threat to strike in protest of outstanding issues with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

The series is now tied 2-2 after West Indies lost the rain-affected fourth ODI by nine wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis method on Sunday at Kensington Oval.

West Indies also won the rain-affected third ODI by eight wickets last Friday at Kensington Oval.

Squad: Chris Gayle (captain), Lionel Baker, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Dale Richards, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons.
