The Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) tried and tried and tried, but in the end, there was no stopping leaders and champions Jamaica from securing a draw in their 11th-round WICB regional four-day cricket clash at Sabina Park yesterday.

Set an imposing 312 after the CCC declared their second innings at 369-7 midway in the morning session, Jamaica, behind defiant knocks from in-form wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr and David Bernard Jr, closed yesterday's fourth and final day on 190-7.

The total, 122 runs shy of the victory target, allowed Jamaica to secure six valuable points as they inched six points closer to claiming the championship.

Unbeaten 58

Baugh, who has now scored two centuries and a half-century since his return to the Jamaica team three weeks ago, made an uncharacteristic, but patient, unbeaten 58 off 123 balls, while Bernard, who has looked good all season with both bat and ball and is in a candidate for all-rounder of the championship, made 47.

Bernard, who came to crease with Jamaica in dire straits at 45-4, shared in two important partnerships, 57 with Wavell Hinds and 64 with Baugh, as Jamaica were put on the back foot by fast bowler Kevin McClean.

The oustanding McLean ended with 3-37, while first innings destroyer, Trinidadian left-arm spinner, Kavesh Katansingh, took 2-34 for match figures of 6-103.

"The CCC, as they have been doing all season, proved that they belong in this competition by playing some good cricket over the four days. They really pushed us to the limit," said Jamaica's captain Tamar Lambert.

"We are still in a good position to win the championship. The only team we have to worry about now is the Leewards. We still have another six points to get and the hope is that we can get them against the Windwards at the Trelawny Stadium," he added.

Man of the Match and CCC captain-coach, Floyd Reifer, said he was proud of his team's effort.

"I thought we played really well. After giving them a total of over 300 runs, I thought we had the game to win. But in the end, the Jamaicans fought their way out," he said.

AT KINGSTOWN, St Vincent: The match between the Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago ended in a draw at Arnos Vale yesterday.
