Proper road supervision needed
Published: Tuesday | March 24, 2009
After approximately 20 years, the obstacle course that is St Johns Road off William Street in Spanish Town was somewhat repaired between March 9 and 13. I have no doubt that the citizens and users of this strip of road must be extremely grateful, despite the rough method employed.
Stone-filled dirt was laid on the road, levelled and rolled. Nothing further was done to the dusty trail, but it is by far better than what was there, which, over a six-month period has cost me two pairs of steering-rack ends and tie-rod ends, not to mention the control-arm bushings and stab-bar links. That was $36,000 in front-end repairs over a six-month period and I am now trying to replace the two front tyres.
Age-old problem
Now, with the road being repaired we have ended up with an age-old problem. Excess dirt that was scraped off the surface was arbitrarily deposited in the drains, thus blocking the run-off of water and causing mosquitos to have a new nest in which to breed.
This will now require the Ministry of Health to spray the area more frequently than the once-in-six-weeks programme apparently now in effect. I do not know who the contractor was for the road repair, but would appeal to his better conscience that he send someone to correct the problem.
I would also call upon the member of parliament with responsibility for Hampton Green to carry out checks on work done within her constituency and be satisfied that it has been properly done before sanctioning payment of contracts.
I am appealing to the section of the ministry of health and Environment that deals with mosquito eradication to assist with additional visits to spray the area until the problem is rectified. There are many ageing individuals, as well as young babies and children residing in this community. I do hope that this anomaly will be corrected speedily.
