Doctor's Advice - Her occasional adulteries

Published: Sunday | March 22, 2009

  • Q: Doctor, I beg you not to publish my name, or any details from which I could be recognised. I have to reluctantly admit to you that I am an adulterous wife.

I have been married for over 20 years now to a well-off and successful man. Our marriage was wonderful to begin with, but then it became the 'old, old story' of a man not paying enough attention to his woman.

He is away a lot, because of the demands of his busy job. I sometimes suspect that he 'plays around' with his secretaries or female business contacts, but I am not sure of that. Admittedly, as soon as he comes home to Jamaica he immediately wants to make love to me.

To be frank, Doctor, I feel like I have been neglected by him. So, over the last eight years or so I have taken a number of lovers, mostly among men who have visited my house to discuss my charitable activities.

During all this time, I have taken care not to become pregnant. But I am beginning to wonder whether I could have caught any infection, even though I have no symptoms?

A:You do not need to fret about being identified by readers of The Sunday Gleaner. I NEVER publish names. And in your case, I have altered several of your personal details, so as to prevent you from being recognised.

Now, you say that you have 'no symptoms' of any sexually transmitted infection. But I must tell you that several of the common STIs DO produce no symptoms at all in most women ! Yet the germs can be breeding rapidly inside you, and harming the ovaries, tubes and adjacent organs.

That applies to both chlamydia and gonorrhoea, both of which are usually SYMPTOMLESS in females. So you should accept the fact that it is possible that you might have caught one or other of these germs from a lover.

An additional factor is this. You suspect that your husband might have been unfaithful over the years. So it is certainly possible that he might have brought some infection home to you.

Summing up, I think it would be wise of you to consult some discreet doctor who has the facilities to test you for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and other STDs.

Finally, perhaps you should think about where your sex life is going. Is it wise to stay in a marriage where adultery is so regularly practised by one partner, and possibly by both?

  • Q:I am a married man, and a girl in Montego Bay is saying that I am the father of the baby that she is expecting. I do not think so, because I do not recall having sex with this young lady - though I did meet her at a party. Could I get blood tests done right away on me, her and the unborn baby to prove that I am 'not guilty' ?

A: I am afraid that paternity testing, to find out whether you are the baby-father, cannot be done until after the child has been born.

  • Q: I am female, aged 47, and my sex life is not too great. Would hormone replacement therapy (HRT) help it, Doc?

A: HRT would probably increase the lubrication in your vagina - especially if you use it in the form of vaginal cream.

But I cannot say that the hormones will necessarily improve any other aspect of your love life. Instead, I would strongly suggest that you consult a good therapist or counsellor who is used to dealing with sexual and relationship problems.

  • Q: My menses stopped seven years ago, when I was 48. But now they seem to have returned again, Doc. Why?

A: This bleeding cannot be menstrual. Please understand that the blood loss occurring after the menopause is over can be due to something real SERIOUS - such as cancer. Therefore, you must see a doctor during the next few days, in order to find out what is going on inside your body. Do not delay !

  • Q: I am a man of 31, and recently I have been experiencing a little pain in passing urine, Doc. Do you think that this could be due to an enlarged prostate gland?

A: Enlargement of the prostate is nearly unknown among guys who are in their 30s. It generally starts at about age 55 to 60.

Statistically, the likeliest cause for the symptom of pain in passing water is an infection. So please go to a doctor, taking with you a specimen of your urine in a very clean glass container, so she can test it.

  • Q: Would exercise help me lose weight, Doctor?

A: Sure. But you do have to do a lot of exercise over a long period of time in order to 'shift' significant amounts of weight.

And at the same time, it is essential to cut down on your intake of food - especially FATTY foods.

  • Q: I am a 31-year-old female who has recently started having terrible period pains. Some people say it is because I do not have a child. Others say it is because I am not sexually active. Are they right, Doc?

A: No, neither of these suggestions is correct. I do not know why you have suddenly started having menstrual pain at the age of 31, but one strong possibility is the condition called 'endometriosis,' which hits many women in their 30s.

What you need to do now is to get a good internal check-up from a doctor. Depending on what she finds, she may well put you on tablets which I hope will ease the pain.

  • Q: Doc, please answer an intimate question that I cannot ask my own doctor !

I am a guy of 42, and my sex life is good. But is it true that a man's size steadily decline with age? I am terrified by the idea that at 60 or 70, I might be reduced to a couple of inches or so.

A: Please quit fretting. American researchers looked into this question many years ago. They found that there is only a very SLIGHT shrinkage with age.

The reduction in length and girth of the male organ as one gets older is so minute that most people would never even notice it.

  • Q: My boy friend is American, and he is talking about bringing me back a 'clitoral stimulator' from his next trip to New York. I hate to admit my ignorance, Doc, but I don't know what a clitoral stimulator is.

Q: Well, as you can imagine, it is a device which is supposed to come into contact with the woman's clitoris, so as to give her more pleasure and assists her to reach orgasm.

The most common type of stimulator is in the form of a RING which fits round the base of the man's penis. On its top, it has a projection which is supposed to rub against the clitoris during intercourse. I do hope it helps you.
