Dever Orgill has scored several goals for Jamaica's Under-20 team.

National Under-20 coach, Donovan Duckie, believes the young Reggae Boyz still have some sharpening up to do ahead of next month's final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, despite a 1-0 win over Mexico's Under-20s in a friendly international at the Ferdie Neita Park on Tuesday night.

"There are still a few glitches here and there. I thought defensively and tactically we were very good. In terms of our offensive transition, things are still a little bit off, but this is due to the absence of on-field work," Duckie said.

Prior to their last three matches, which also saw the national team tackle Costa Rica last week, the unit has focused its attention on an intense fitness programme that has seen the team spend most of their time in the gym in the last few months.

Good strength

"We have good strength and endurance right now, but we need to improve on our explosiveness, we are definitely behind on our sharpness. We saw that in the Costa Rica games, but we will go back to the field and look to improve in those areas," he added.

Jamaica drew the first match against Costa Rica 0-0 and lost the second 1-0.

On Tuesday night, it was a peach of a goal from striker Dever Orgill that gave the Jamaicans a third consecutive win against Mexican opposition on local soil, at three separate age group levels.

The beneficiary of five or six neatly strung passes, Orgill craftily dismissed his defender in a tight space, before blasting wide of the Mexican goalkeeper for the team's 42nd-minute lead.

In a second half which saw the young Boyz giving up space to the Mexicans, who looked dangerous with neat play and penetrative runs, Orgill almost increased the lead from a 60th minute counter-attack.

The forward did well to worm his way inside the last defender, but under pressure and being forced away from goal, booted just wide of a rapidly advancing 'keeper and the target.

Satisfied with the result, Duckie believed it would go a long way in boosting team morale.

"We really wanted to win this game. It will do a lot of good for our confidence, they are one of CONCACAF's top teams, they have a superior programme to us, but we have been working and know what we need to do," he said.

Next stop - mexico

The team will next head to Mexico where they face the Under-20s in a rematch, before facing a club team a few days later. The Jamaicans are then expected to travel to Fort Lauderdale for a game on the 26th against Canada.

For the eight-nation final round qualifying for the 2009 World Cup that will be held in Egypt between September and October, Jamaica have been drawn in group A with the United States, El Salvador and the winner of a play-off between Honduras and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Hosts Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Costa Rica and Mexico are in the other group. Two teams will qualify from each zone to the World Cup.
