Principals group happy for ban

Albert Corcho, president of the Association of Principals and Vice-principals, yesterday welcomed the Broadcasting Commission's decision to ban songs with content deemed explicitly sexual and violent, even if concealed by bleeps.

All dancehall songs which qualify as 'daggerin' content have also been outlawed from the airwaves.

"We are very concerned in terms of what is happening and we are happy that the Broadcasting Commission has taken steps to stop this," Corcho told The Gleaner.

He added: "There are so many other problems and this music is appalling and under no circumstance should these lyrics be played on our airwaves."

Topical issue

Corcho, who is also principal of Tarrant High School, said the songs were very popular at his school.

"Every other student you hear with the songs and it is now the topical issue on every corner," he said.

Reacting to the developments, the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) said the approach by the commission has placed the primary responsibility for addressing the music content on artistes and music producers to develop material suitable for broadcast, as against material prepared for the dancehall being supplied to media houses that must use a series of bleeps and edits to remove inappropriate lyrics.

"Our association has generally been wary of the imposition of bans, as there is a thin line between a ban and the stifling of creative expression and so, the creators and producers of the music are now directly challenged to get that balance right," the MAJ said.
