  • Pelicans fly away with Cargill Cup

    PELICANs edged defending champions Barbican 1-0 to win the 2007 NCB Capital Markets Masters League mid-season final and the Peter Cargill Cup on Sunday at Barbican Oval.

    The league's leading goalscorer, Roan Rosseau, scored the game winner in the 62nd minute to raise his season tally to 13.

    Pelicans dominated the game from the onset with their efficient passing game but were contained by the Barbican defence led by Stafford Fong.

    Barbican's attack, spearheaded by Denton Shedden and Mikel Dillion, got their share of scoring chances but good, consistent defensive work by the Pelicans' defence, marshalled by Andrew 'Bowa' Hines, allowed their goaltender, Derrick Grant, to keep a clean sheet.

    In the second half, the teams increased the pace and created a few chances but failed to score until , Rosseau, who had a great game, slipped his marker, got behind the Barbican defence and calmly slotted home for the game winner.

    Barbican pressed relentlessly and striker Wayne Wonder came close to scoring, but Pelicans held on to gain their first lien on the Cargill Cup.

    Avril Cargill , the wife of the late national coach and national player, his daughter, Danique, and son, David, were l on hand to present the coveted prize to the winning captain, Pete Smith. Coach Cargill also played for Pelicans in the Masters League.

  • Orange Bay, Kensington in final showdown

    Orange Bay and Kensington will face-off in tomorrow's final of the West Portland Twenty20 cricket competition.

    The final will be played at Chetstowe Field, starting at 11:00 a.m.

    In last week's semi-finals, Orange Bay scored a nine-wicket win over Sunshine at Skibo Oval.

    Batting first, Dennis Clarke hit 29 against Tyson Gordon's 2-12 and Otoy Newell's 3-17 as Sunshine reached xx all out.

    In reply, Orange Bay scored 91 for one off 8.3 overs. Tyson Gordon struck 57 not out and Lerone Tryell 24 not out.

    Also at Skibo, Kensington defeated Rock Hall by seven wickets.

    Rock Hall first scored 95 all out with Beswrick Taylor making 27 not out against Julian Nandarthan's 3-16 and Omar Lindo's 3-9.

    Kensington replied with 101 for three. Debris Francis got 64.

  • Sting withdraw from WBA

    The Western Basketball Association (WBA) has been hit by the withdrawal of Sting for the remainder of the season.

    A WBA release, which was sent earlier this week, stated: "Sting have decided not to continue their participation in this season's FBL citing team organisational problems.

    "Therefore for statistical purposes, teams with remaining matches against Sting will be awarded full points".

    Meanwhile, two matches will be played tomorrow at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

    Lady Avalanche face MoBay Knights at 4:30 p.m, while MoBay Pacers tackle Naldi Lady Knights at 6:00 p.m.

    At the end of seven rounds, Lady Avalanche lead with 12 points, ahead of Angels, 11, Pacers, nine, and Knights, eight.

  • Vincent heads to Christian Academy

    Nicholas Vincent of Penwood High School has been awarded a full basketball scholarship to Genesis One Christian Academy in Mendenhall, Mississippi.

    The 6' 9", 215-pound centre will leave the island shortly to begin classes. Vincent attended the Jamaica Basketball Development (JBD), Inc/Jamaica Basketball Association (JABA)-sponsored Star Search Basketball and Life Skills Development Camp in July and is the fourth student/athlete to receive a scholarship since the conclusion of the camp.

  • Harbour View Masters give to school

    Harbour View Football Club Masters distributed 20 sets of football shirts, shorts, socks and footballs to the Harbour View Primary School coach, players and students, recently, at the school's devotion.

    These were donated by the New York-based Capital Lions FC who each year tour the island and play against the Harbour View Masters while bringing school supplies to two community-based schools.

    Sunshine Basic School teachers and students received schoolbags, books, crayons, pencils and pens.

  • TT Championships

    The annual National Championships of the Jamaica Table Tennis Associa-tion (JTTA) will be staged over three days from September 28-30.

    The championships, which were postponed from the end of last month because of Hurricane Dean, will be held at the G.C. Foster College.

    Parish team events will be played on Friday's opening day, Junior events will be contested on Saturday when adult events will also start.

    On Sunday, adult events will be completed and veteran events and finals will be played.

    Play will commence on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with men's and women's parish team events and these will be completed by the end of the day. Boys' and girls' Under-9 and Under-15 singles will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Under-12 and Under-18 singles. Boys, girls and mixed junior doubles (Under-18) will then follow.

    On Saturday afternoon, adult events will begin, starting with men's and women's Open.

    In addition to the continuation of the COK Men's and Women's Open, veterans over-40 and veterans over-50, as well as all finals, will be contested on Sunday.

    Entries are now being taken and may be made by phoning JTTA president Keith Garvey at 433-1308 or 819-8574 or Justin Allen at 577-7138, with closing date being September 25.

  • BoJ beat BNS 1-0

    Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) clipped Bank of Nova Scotia 1-0 in the final of the 2007 Norman Goodison Inter-Bank Five-A Side Football Rally last Sunday at the NWC playing field, Mona.

    In the exciting contest, BNS dominated the first half but were prevented from scoring by their former goalkeeper, Joseph Sardath, who made some excellent saves.

    On three occasions he left his line to prevent Nicholas McCreath from scoring after he beat his markers. Clint Reid and Dwayne Smith also got chances to score for BoJ but they were denied by goalkeeper Antar Freeman.

    BoJ got the winning goal in the 32nd minute when Dwayne Smith got by defender Ghana Burrowes and fired a ferocious shot from 20 metres out which beat Antar Freeman in goal.

    BNS went all out for the equaliser but they were denied by good defending from Roy Williams, Reid and Smith and also Sardath, who kept superbly, to capture the Banker's Association Trophy.

  • Bridgeport United 'A' battle Hellshire United

    Bridgeport United 'A' battle Hellshire United in a key third-round match in the Portmore Netball Association (PNA) Senior League tomorrow at Ascot High School. Match time is 2:00 p.m.

    Bridgeport are coming off back-to-back losses to Ken's Wildflower and Westchester while Hellshire lost to Ken's Wildflower last week, therefore, both teams want to rebound immediately.

    The Bridgeport/Hellshire encounter is one of five games on in the league.

    In other Senior League games, Ken's Wildflower play Bridgeport United 'B', at 3:00 p.m., a match Ken's are expected to win, while Thompson Pen tackle Invaders 'A' at 4:00 p.m.

    In Junior League play, Invaders 'B' take on PGS at 2:00 p.m. while Portmore Pines and Gore Tuca square off at 4:00 p.m.

    In games played last Sunday, Ken's Wildflower had an exciting 34-25 victory over arch-rivals Hellshire United, Westchester clobbered Invaders 51-27 and Thompson Pen blew away Bridgeport United 'B' 45-15. The Bridgeport team suited up only five players. In Junior League action, Gore Tuca stopped Bridgeport High 19-15.
