Jamaica Gleaner Letters

LETTER OF THE DAY - Lara is the greatest ever!
The Editor, Sir: Brian Charles Lara is the greatest batsman that has ever graced the face of the cricketing arena, comparable to none. The negative comments that have been made recently are very unjust as the game of cricket is a gentleman's and a team game.

Lewd front-page carnival photo

The Editor, Sir:

I found your picture on the front page of The Gleaner of April 16, 2007 to be lewd and inappropriate for a front page item.

'Brainless' comparison

THE EDITOR, Sir: I disagree with those who pour scorn on the use of the Carnival photo on Page A1 of Monday's Gleaner, April 16. Carnival has become a widely accepted event on the entertainment calendar in Jamaica, as in many other Caribbean territories.

Touristsfearful of Jamaica

The Editor, Sir: I'm responding to your article on the decline in United States tourists in Jamaica. I've been to Jamaica three times, working in Port Royal and travelling all over the island, including the resort areas, the Blue Mountains and everything in between.

The plague of gun violence

The Editor, Sir: In March 2005, I wrote The Gleaner and asked that Jamaica consider banning all firearms from the island. In response, I received several negative letters suggesting that I was wrong, stupid, or just wasting my time with such a 'frivolous' suggestion.

Timely articleon gay tolerance

The Editor, Sir: Your article about the plea by the bishop for tolerance towards homosexuals is very timely. FYI, a couple of interesting developments around this issue: A Jamaican recently got refugee status in the U.S. because of homophobia in Jamaica.
