Gov't, Opposition must unite
published: Wednesday | March 31, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE OPPOSITION is threatening to call out protesters about the increase in property tax.

I think what the Opposition should do is tell us what will happen to this country if we go through another protest like the one we had with increase in the price of gasolene. Please tell me when you destroy roads etc. how will you restore the infrastructure and where will you get the funds to do all that you say is now needed for this country?

I would also like to know having unleashed the forces of the protesters, how do you know that those same forces will not come back at you when you are in power. We must begin to forget the politics of the 1970's and 1980's and we must all work together to bring this country back to sanity. This does not mean that you must not oppose but please be very careful that you do not unleash mayhem on us all.

GENERAL INDISCIPLINE

I personally would like to know if and when you get into power how are you going to deal with the general indiscipline of the society. How are you going to make Jamaicans stop blocking roads, putting rubbish in gullies, break laws with impunity. Remember that you will be dealing with the same people that the current government has to deal with and so I need to know what plans you have to make us mend our ways and to begin to think of each other as our brother and sister. It is very important that we know what plans you have to take us out of the economic malaise we are now in and where will you get the funds to maintain civil services at its present level.

It is also high time that both the Government and the Opposition stop playing one-upmanship and that both sides get together to try and solve our problems.

PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

With respect to increase in property taxes certainly this government and your government when you get back into power will need funds to fund the various Parish Councils. What you should be doing as the Opposition is to keep the Government on its toes and ensure that all funds collected by them are properly spent. I would also hope that when the present Government becomes the Opposition they will not seek to undermine but rather to work with you to create a better country.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA COVER,

Kingston 6
