Table (xx) presents the data related to type and availability of facilities and reflects the
changes since 2001. At Census 2011, about seven out of every ten households (71 per
cent) had access to water closets. This reflects an increase by 14 percentage points since
2001. The pit, which was the main type for 36 per cent of households in 2001, was being
used by 23 per cent of households in 2011. About 2.1 per cent of all households
reported no toilet facilities in 2011. This compares with 2.5 per cent in 2001. Entitlement
to use the facilities was related to the occupancy of the dwelling in which they were
located and as such public facilities were excluded. Just over eight of every ten
households (82 per cent) had exclusive use of toilet facilities in 2011 representing a three
percentage point increase over the 2001 proportion.
Kitchen and Bathroom Facilities
Questions on kitchen and bathroom facilities were included in the census for the first
time in 2001 and were repeated in 2011. These questions focused on the availability of
specific facilities. An important note in the instruction manual related to the fact that
kitchens and bathrooms may or may not be attached to the main building. In the case of
the kitchen, the facilities of interest were a sink and waste pipe and in the case of the
bathroom, it was the presence of a fixed bath or shower. At the time of the 2011 Census,
