Type of Toilet Facilities
The questions related to toilet facilities identified availability and type. Availability
refers to whether the household has exclusive use or whether the facilities are shared.
Pre-testing of the census questionnaires revealed an increasing creativity especially in
the rural areas in disposing of waste. The census included as water closet any system
designed for flushing the sewage into a sewer main or absorption pit. Allowance was
also made for a category ‘other’ described as some system devised by the household
and representing some variation of a water closet or pit latrine. The specific answers
given for these ‘other’ responses are being extracted manually for presentation in a
future report.
