Orgill
VANCOUVER, Canada (CMC):Vancouver Whitecaps' head coach Teitur Thordarson believes Jamaican teenager Dever Orgill has a bright future in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and showed that in his brief appearance last weekend.
Orgill, 19, struck his first goal in league competition for the Vancouver Whitecaps, but the reigning champions were beaten 2-1 by visiting Rochester Rhinos in their USL First Division match at Swangard Stadium. The Jamaica Under-20 international delivered the consolation goal although he was only given 14 minutes of playing time.
"Slowly and surely, he will get more minutes in our coming matches and I think we have a lot of things to look forward to with him in the future," Thordarson stated.
With his goal, Orgill became the first player from the Whitecaps' Residency Programme to score a goal in a men's team match.
76th-minute substitute
On as a 76th-minute substitute, Orgill picked up a pass from Ansu Toure on the left and lashed a low shot past Scott Vallow in Rochester's goal in the 90th minute. "Though he's young and inexperienced, he scored a great goal. We know that he is capable of doing that," Thordarson stated.
Orgill's appearance in the game was triggered by an injury to the prolific St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) international forward, Marlon James, who suffered a hamstring injury the previous weekend and was not on the roster to face the Rhinos.
James' absence allowed the Canadian youth international Marcus Haber to earn a starting spot before giving way to Orgill inside the last 15 minutes.
