Performer of the week - Nelson soars with four-timer

Having ridden four winners at Caymanas Park last Saturday, Dane Nelson is the Performer of the Week.

The title-chasing jockey booted home 1-2 favourite POSEIDON to a runaway victory in the second race for maiden three-year-olds over 1600 metres, FLY TO THE MOON at 6-5 in the third, SCHOOLGIRL at 5-2 in the fourth and saving the best for last, 8-5 chance OUTSTANDING for trainer Gresford Smith in the Arthur Jones Memorial Cup grade one feature over 1200 metres in post-to-post fashion.

As a result, Nelson pushed his tally to 24, only two adrift of champion and leading jockey Omar Walker, who replied with three winners on the 11-race card.

Last year Nelson finished second to Walker with 105 winners and is hell bent on reversing the tables this year.

"I'm riding well right now and providing I keep out of trouble with the stewards and avoid injury, I'll make a race of it for the championship," said the 24-year-old reinsman.

Nelson, who some weeks ago rode a fabulous five-timer, graduated from the jockeys' school at the back-end of 2002 along with batchmates Paul 'Country' Francis and Oneil Mullings.

Nelson was born to ride. His grandfather, Horatio 'Mussu' Nelson, was champion jockey at Caymanas Park in 1960. He's also the nephew of veteran lightweight jockey Robert Reid and Richie Reid as well.
