Illegal tomatoes go splat

The Customs Department has seized more than 600 pounds of tomatoes which it says were imported by the St Ann-based Bahía Princípe hotel.

The 25 cases of tomato slices, each weighing 25 pounds, were seized last Friday at the Kingston Wharves.

Sliced tomato is included on the list of agricultural produce banned from importation in the Ministry of Agriculture's bid to protect the local industry. As a result, the tomatoes will be disposed of by the Plant Quarantine Division later this week.

Efforts to get a comment from the operators of the hotel have been unsuccessful so far.
