The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) joined Santos with the third-highest number of points in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association/Claro Super League football competition following their 1-1 draw with Maverley-Hughenden in their rescheduled match at the Molynes field on Tuesday.

Robert Wright put the marching men of the army into the lead with a 35th-minute goal.

However, Phillip Peddie scored an equaliser at the 62nd minute for Maverley-Hughenden, which have been barred from using their field for the remainder of the season because of a tragic incident that accounted for the life of an Under-20 player recently.

Superior goal difference

The result pushed the JDF to 27 points, the same as Santos, who are third because of a superior goal difference. Maverley-Hughenden, which advanced to 18 points, remain in seventh position, 14 points adrift leaders August Town, who punished Mountain View United 6-0 at Excelsior High School on Saturday.

The win pushed August Town to 32 points, two ahead of Cavalier, which whipped ninth-place Duhaney Park (15) 3-0. Oneil Morrison and Loxley Thompson were on target for Cavalier, while an own goal made up the tally.

August Town got their goals from Akeem Thenstead (8th), Aphas Bernard (13th), Donovan Hibbert (29th), Barrington Pettigrew (own goal, 72nd), Ezekiel Shaw (83rd) and Nicholas McCreath (85th).

August Town's coach Calvert Fitzgerald was pleased as his team not only scored six goals, but five different players were on the scoresheet.

"I'm satisfied with the number of goals we scored, but I'm not satisfied with our defending. Winning six-love is a satisfying result, but I thought we could have played better," Fitzgerald said.

He added: "We need to approach each match as if it is a final. If we can maximise our points, then we will win the league."

Poor defensive play

Jahmiah Pettigrew, Mountain View's player/coach, thought poor defensive play cost his team.

"A lot of things went wrong today, especially at the back of the field. We made too many errors in defence and we knew from the first round, where we got beaten 5-1, that if we made so many errors at the back, August Town would punish us," a disappointed Pettigrew expressed.

In other games on Saturday, fourth-place Constant Spring (24) beat seventh-placed Real Mona (18) 3-1; second from bottom Liguanea United (seven) clipped 10th-place Police National (seven) 2-1; while Santos drew 1-1 with Bull Bay, who stayed sixth with 23 points.
