Two goals apiece by Devon Hodges, the premier league's top goalscorer, and Valentine Gardener launched Rivoli United into the semi-finals of the Flow Champions Cup all-island knockout football competition, with a 4-0 drubbing of Super League team Duhaney Park yesterday, at the Duhaney Park football field.

Devon Hodges scored the first of his two goals for the St Catherine-based premier league team at the 15th minute when he bolted into the six-yard box to finish a pass.

Duhaney Park almost equalised with a kick from Ricardo Smith that was gallantly saved by goalkeeper Omar Williams.

Just a minute before the close of the half, Hodges made a swift pass to Valentine Gardener at the mouth of the goal and he scored, pushing Rivoli's lead to 2-0.

In the second half, Duhaney Park tried hard to score, but Rivoli thwarted their efforts until Gardener scored a soft goal in the 88th minute to give Rivoli a 3-0 advantage.

Final goal

Two minutes later, Hodges secured the fourth and final goal.

"Overall, it was a good performance," said Rivoli's technical director Bradley Stewart.

"The Duhaney Park team was a little bit on the tired side. They tried to come forward in numbers to create goalscoring opportunities so they left themselves a bit vulnerable at the back. As a result, we were able to exploit this," he reasoned.

Christopher Russell, of Duhaney Park stated that despite being knocked out of the competition, it was a good run for the team. He alluded that after Rivoli's first goal the team panicked and lost their composure.

"I thought that we didn't keep our shape," said the coach of Duhaney Park which had earlier knocked out premier league teams Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens.

"We had a good 25 minutes in the first half and we were matching up with them. But after that we lost our discipline and our shape and it all went to pieces."
