The Art Centre Ltd has awarded more than $55,000 in prizes during an informal ceremony at the Olympia Gallery in Kingston recently.

The competition to design a membership card for the Art Centre's new Loyalty Rewards Club was the buzz among artists, both amateur and professional, during the latter part of 2008.

Entries were judged by Dr Jonathan Greenland, Senior Adviser to the minister of information, youth, culture and Sports; Lois Lake-Sherwood, entrepreneur and artist; Rosemary Thwaites, managing director of the Art Centre; and Julia Vaz-Campbell, marketing consultant and coordinator of the competition. The big winner was David Sykes, who received $25,000 in prizes for placing first.

The second and third prizes went to Adrian Campbell and Negash Davidson, respectively; both were awarded $5,000 in prizes from the Art Centre.

"The Art Centre Design Competition is sheer brilliance," said Sykes. "This competition makes practitioners of one of the most underrated professions feel appreciated. I feel appreciated. And it's not just for the prizes, but the confidence to actually continue, which is a very big deal for any artist."
