Rain foils Guyana's bid

Rain and defective covers combined to thwart Guyana's victory bid as there was no play on the scheduled last day of their ninth-round WICB regional four-day match against Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) on Monday.
There was seepage under the covers at Bourda following overnight and early-morning rain and the umpires Dashroy Balgobin and Goaland Greaves called off play at 2 p.m. local time without a ball being bowled on the final day of the bottom-of-the-table clash.
Visiting Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), trailing Guyana by 243 runs on first innings, were 67 for one at the close of play on Sunday and were under pressure to save the game on the final day.
"It is very disappointing that we couldn't get to press home for a victory," Guyana's manager Carl Moore told CMC Sports.
The Guyanese, on a seven-game winless streak and enduring their worst-ever regional first-class season, made a solid reply to CCC's first innings score of 254 when they compiled 497 for seven declared, propelled by a lifetime best 198 from Man of the Match Narsingh Deonarine.
By earning six first-innings points, the Guyanese have lifted themselves from the cellar position and relegated CCC to last in the seven-team championship table.
Guyana are now sixth, with 20 points. Moore is encouraged that his side may be turning their wretched form around.
"We are satisfied with the overall performance in this match. It has been a big improvement coming from the other matches and we hope we can continue the trend in the next match against Leewards," Moore said.
In the 10th round starting on Friday, Guyana remain at home to face the Leeward Islands and CCC will be away to the Windward Islands.
