Richardson blasts out T&T on final day

NAIN, St Elizabeth:

Fast bowler Andrew Richardson turned in his best performance of the season to guide champions Jamaica to a comfortable 124-run win over Trinidad and Tobago in their West Indies Regional Four-day showdown at Alpart Sports Club yesterday.

Scores: Jamaica 275 and 285, Trinidad and Tobago 190 and 246.

Richardson claimed 5-54 as Trinidad, set an imposing 371 for victory and resuming the fourth and final day on 70 without loss, were dismissed for 246.

The tall pacer ended with match figures of 8-19. Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller supported well by taking 3-65.

The fifth outright win in eight matches this season kept Jamaica in front of the seven-team championship with 72 points, 12 more ahead of the Windward Islands, who jumped to second after scoring an outright win over Barbados (54) in Barbados yesterday.

"It was a good wicket as what you put in is what you get out and that is exactly what I did from day one," said a delighted Richardson, who was claiming his first fiver of the season. "I tried to bowl straight and as quickly as I could.

"The spinners have been doing a good job all season, so whenever I was asked to play my role, I try to do it to my best and today (yesterday) it paid off," added the 27-year-old, who has in the past represented the West Indies 'A' Team.

The day began with Trinidad needing a challenging 301 to pull off what would have been another thrilling come-from-behind victory, as they did at the same venue two years ago.

But thanks to Richardson, who struck two early morning blows to have them tottering at 73-2 and later returned to clean up the middle to lower order, they were denied.

Richardson, who after the game said he was feeling the best (physically) he has felt since he was 16 years old, accounted for the wickets of opener Imran Khan, who added just one to his overnight score of 32, the out-of-form Darrn Ganga, who recorded a 'pair', the potentially dangerous Kieron Pollard (11), fast bowler Ravi Rampaul (5) and last man out, Magnum Nanan (6).

Impressive looking 18-year-old opener, Adrian Barath, who topscored for the visitors in their first innings with 58, was again their top run-getter with a composed 71 in the second innings, while 20-year-old the left-hander Daren Bravo, brother of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne, showed that he is also one for the future with a stroke-filled 70.

"Our batting didn't click," said a disappointing-looking Kelvin Williams, the Trinidad and Tobago coach who had expressed optimism the previous day that his team could get the target.

He added: "Secondly, there were a few umpiring decisions that we thought were unfortunate. But having said, Jamaica outplayed us over the four days," he added.

Jamaica will travel to Barbados this weekend for their next game.
