Wonderful ambassadors
Published: Tuesday | March 10, 2009
I read with interest your article featuring the quote by Duane Lyon, that Jamaica is the friendliest island on Earth (Saturday, March 7). I haven't travelled to as many countries as Lyon, but I do share his sentiments. I have just returned from two-and-a-half weeks on the island. It was my third trip and this time I was accompanied by nine friends.
I own a bed-and-breakfast establishment in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada, surrounded by orchards and vineyards. It has been my privilege to get to know many of the offshore workers who live in my neighbourhood for as long as eight months. These people are wonderful ambassadors and Jamaica should be very proud of these people who represent their country.
Church services
I have also become involved with the church services that are hosted by the Caribbean Workers Outreach Programme and love to invite locals out to experience the warmth of worship, Jamaican style!
In 2007 I travelled to Jamaica with my daughter and son-in-law and back with a friend in 2008. Each year we add a few days on to our stay, but it is never long enough! We travel from Montego Bay to St Thomas seeking out our friends and their families and enjoying their amazing hospitality.
Last Friday, some of my worker friends made the trip back to Canada and the next day were out pruning in -30 degree temperatures. They all work hard and deserve a lot of respect from Canadians and fellow Jamaicans alike.
It will be a sweet sound when we hear the patois voices ringing out in the grocery store again! Bless up, everyone!
I am, etc.,
