An appeal to the PM
Published: Tuesday | March 10, 2009
I would like the prime minister to get a copy of this letter which is as follows:
Mr Prime Minister, you are the head of an elected government and it is your responsibility to protect the people of Jamaica by whatever means necessary. All I am reading about is politics in West Portland and nothing about the security of the people.
Afraid
Those dons, or whatever they are called, are running the country at will with their guns, and if one disagrees with them, one is murdered, sometimes publicly, and in broad daylight. Are the police and military afraid of them? Most of the crimes that are being committed out there are American-type crimes, and at least 90 per cent of such crimes committed there are solved and the criminals brought to justice.
Please let American police and not Scotland Yard help eradicate these lawless criminals! When you became prime minister, I congratulated you and asked that fighting crime be your number-one priority. Now, it is business as usual and crime is spreading like cancer. I believe that your police and military are ill-equipped, and, along with the corrupt ones, make it worse.
Fight these outlaws from the air, land and sea! Impose a curfew and martial law if necessary and go from house to house in your search, and if people are found to be harbouring and protecting them, they, too, should be charged for the same crime. These people are outlaws and should be treated as such. Declare war against them and in the process of searching, remove all of the zinc fences.
Cut non-elected positions
I read where there are plans for more constituencies to make the total an uneven number. I would suggest that the number of constituencies be brought down to 33 overall and the non-elected positions in the House be reduced. Cut back on the emoluments and benefits that are afforded to members of parliament and let them work and pay the appropriate taxes.
In doing so, Mr Prime Minister, there would be sufficient funds to fight crime without raising taxes on the already heavily burdened taxpayer.
I am, etc.,
