Super League champions Jamalco whipped Windalco 37-22 to capture the Jamaica Netball Association/Jamaica National Building Society Open League trophy at the Leila Robinson on Saturday.

In the consolation knockout final, Hampshire 'A' defeated defending champions, Tivoli Gardens 'B' 33-31 in extra time, to claim their first hold on the trophy.

Mishka Banfield led the scoring for Hampshire 'A' with 18 goals from 23 attempts, as they trailed the losers 13-10 at half time. Tivoli Gardens 'B' then led 16-19 at the end of the third period.

Solid support

However, Hampshire 'A' rallied in the final quarter to tie the game 25-25 at the end of regulation time. Banfield received solid support from Shauna-Lee Mais (11 goals from 14 tries) and Marcia Johnson four goals from five attempts. Nekeisha Cohen, 22 goals from 25 attempts, and Patricia Chambers nine goals from 14 tries scored the goals for Tivoli Gardens 'B'.

Jamalco dominated the feature match from the opening whistle as they romped to an easy 20-8 at half time.

Dominated third period

The Winston Nevers-coached Jamalco then outscored their opponents (10-9) for a 30-17 score at the end of the third period. National goal shooter Romelda Aiken led the way for Jamalco with 27 goals from 38 attempts and received good support from Marsha Murphy, who scored eight goals from 13 tries.

Viola Francis (13 goals from 20 attempts) and Ann-Kay Griffiths (nine goals from 10 tries), were the leading scorers for Windalco.

Wayne Shaw, manager of Jamalco, said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"The girls really played well because we expected to beat them quite comfortably and we did that," said Shaw. "Windalco are still a young team and inexperienced and we have a lot more experienced players on our team."

Shaw added that Jamalco are now gearing up to defend their Berger Paints, Super League title.

"We have four former national players who will return to our team for the Super League competition and this will make us a lot stronger because a lot of the other teams in this league have been adding a number of national players to their roster," said Shaw.
