Mid-season champions Seba United, behind a hat-trick from Delroy Ellis, started their second round Captain's Bakery football campaign with a big 5-0 win against Mt Salem in the feature game of Sunday night's triple-header at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay.

The Seba United team, which opened up a five-point lead atop the standings in the 12-team competition, also got goals from the prolific Wilfred Smith and the reliable Kemar James.

In the other two games at Jarrett Park, a resurgent Wadadah, behind goals from Fitzroy Reid (two) and Curtis Palmer (penalty), turned in a dominant performance to register a 3-0 win over Clarke's Town while Violet Kickers avenged the 2-0 defeat they suffered in the first round, clipping Granville FC 2-1.

In a Hanover derby, which was also played on Sunday, the struggling Bamboo FC and Montpelier FC played out a 1-1 draw, which did very little to improve their standings in the competition.

In their win against Mt Salem, Seba United created numerous chances but failed to score as the half ended 0-0. However, in the second half, they were rampant as, after Ellis fired them into a 50th-minute lead, the goals came pouring in. Smith and James scored in rapid succession before Ellis returned with two late goals to end the contest.

Penalty awarded

In the Wadadah clash against Clarke's Town, which was the opening game of the triple-header, Wadadah dominated the early action and took the lead in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty. Palmer made no mistake from the spot, making the half-time score 1-0.

After battling for most of the second half without scoring, Wadadah ended the contest in fine style with Reid scoring twice in two minutes - the 88th and 90th minutes, making the final score 3-0.

First-round defeat

In their clash against the much-vaunted Granville FC, the Violet Kickers looked all set for a repeat of their first-round defeat when their opponents took a 1-0 lead courtesy of substitute Dexter Smith in the 78th minute.

However, with defeat looking imminent, Violet Kickers had a brilliant final two minutes in which they drew level in the 88th minute through Dalton Brissette and then snatched victory in the 90th minute when Ricardo Hart scored.

The competition's eventual winners will take home the Captain's Bakery Trophy and $150,000. In addition, they will earn qualification for the 2009-10 Digicel NPL qualification tournament.
