Leaders have failed
Published: Thursday | January 29, 2009
I find it absolutely amazing that such a relatively small country such as Jamaica seems to be so utterly ungovernable. Crime, violence, lawlessness, corruption have enveloped the country. No one is safe and nowhere is safe.
The leaders of this country who have a responsibility to protect the citizens have failed miserably. Many people surmise that they have abdicated this responsibility due to a lack of concern or an inability to lead. I think it is the latter.
Consumed with power
Jamaican leaders are consumed with having power and they will do anything to get it. They know that if they lead well and people are comfortable with their lives there is little need for change. They also know that gone are the days when people's votes could be bought for a drink of rum. Most Jamaicans have wised up.
Then why don't they lead well? The answer is simple. They lack the ability to lead. This is not only true of this government, but successive governments since independence.
Current situation
What's the current situation?
A lack of foreign direct investment which leads to massive unemployment.
Local businesses having to spend a large part of their operating budget on security, which invariably leads to an increase in the price of goods and services.
Low productivity due to uncertainty and constant fear.
People being afraid to leave their houses, especially after dark, because of crime and violence.
Severe health issues due to the stresses of people's daily existence.
The list is endless and there is no reason to hope for better. This may sound pessimistic but the leaders have not engendered any sense of optimism.
Jamaica is a sinking ship in need of a capable captain.
