PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Trinidadian football tzar, Jack Warner, will not be taking Sunderland's recall of Dwight Yorke to FIFA, saying he feared a negative fall-out for the other Trinidadian internationals based at the English Premiership club.
Warner, a special advisor to the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation, said Sunday he would avoid that course of action in an attempt to safeguard the future of Yorke, Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards, the other Trinidadian internationals based at Sunderland.
"Yorke, Edwards and Jones could be victimised if I decide to take that route," Warner stated at a press conference on Sunday at the CONCACAF office.
Yorke, who skippered the Soca Warriors in a 1-1 draw against Guatemala last week in the World Cup qualifiers, missed last Wednesday's match against the United States after he was recalled by Sunderland's manager Roy Keane.
The move sparked a war of words between Warner and Keane, especially after T&T went down 3-0 in the encounter in Chicago.
"Since losing 3-0 to the USA, I have constantly been asked what action I was going to take," Warner revealed.
"Three of my colleagues have begged me to take the matter to a higher level in FIFA but I have dequality strikequality strikecided not to take that route.
"What I can tell you is that it won't happen again. I tell you today the players will play. We gave in easily and we paid a price for it.
"What I know is that we will qualify for the World Cup Finals, though we haven't received a nickel from the government.
"There will be a packed crowd in October when we play the return game against the USA."
Warner accused Keane of 'insensitivity and disrespect' and "callous disregard for the rights of small countries" and said the former Manchester United captain was treading a "dangerous path".
In response, Keane labelled Warner a 'clown' and said he was a 'disgrace' for handling the Yorke issue in the way he had.
Fired back
The FIFA vice-president then fired back, accusing Keane of further disrespect and lack of committment to national duty.
"To prove the type of individual Keane is he left Yorke out of his team to play Wigan on Saturday," Warner pointed out. "If he wanted Yorke that bad why did he leave him out his team."
T&T's stand-in captain Cyd Gray admitted that the sudden loss of Yorke affected the performance of the Soca Warriors against the US.
The 36-year old Yorke, who played for Aston Villa and Manchester United in the height of his career, has been the most successful player to come out of T&T.
