Western Bureau:

Maldon High School got off to an enterprising start in the ISSA/ Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup school-boy football competition yesterday afternoon, when they surprised two-time champions Herbert Morrison 2-1 in their Zone A game, on the home ground of the latter at Bogue, in Montego Bay.

In a game that was tactically deficit for the most part, Maldon proved to be the more composed and were rewarded with goals from Jermaine Jackson (penalty) and Obrian Robinson. Herbert Morrison's lone goal came from Brishnell Dawkins.

"The game was not intense so the boys never played up to their full ability," said Loren Sailsman, coach of the Maldon team. "Nonetheless, we are quite pleased with the result as starting the season with maximum three points must be a good result."

In another Zone A game in Montego Bay, newcomer Green Pond High started their campaign in a surprising manner, holding seasoned campaigners Irwin High to 0-0 draw at Irwin High School.

At Maldon, after a lacklustre first half, the home team started the second looking a bit more resolute and they were rewarded in the 55th minute when Sheldon Jackson was fouled in the penalty area. Jackson (Jermaine) made no mistake from the spot, making the score 1-0.

Quality strike

Finding themselves behind, Herbert Morrison stepped up the tempo and drew level with a quality strike in the 67th minute. On a dribble that started outside the penalty area, Dawkins waltzed between three defenders and fired beyond reach of the goalkeeper, making the score 1-1.

However, before the Herbert Morrison celebrations died down, Maldon regained the lead in the 70th minute with a well-taken goal. Robinson pounced on a superb pass from Conrod Gordon and with the goalkeeper at his mercy, fired home powerfully to make the final score 2-1.

The competition will continue this afternoon with 15 games spanning teams from zones B, D, E, H and L. Among the teams that will be on show are former champions Frome Technical, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro College.
