GUITARIST Maurice Gordon says he did not have money on his mind when he decided to record a song in tribute to folklorist Louise 'Miss Lou' Bennett. It was just his way of showing respect to a Jamaican original who championed her country's culture.
"It's not a moneymaking effort, it's a contribution to Miss Lou. For me it was a matter of giving back," Gordon told The Gleaner.
Recorded last year
The song, We Miss You Ms Lou, was recorded last year but production on it ended in the summer in time for it to be released near September 7, which would have been Miss Lou's 86th birthday.
Gordon plays guitar and percussion on We Miss You Ms Lou, while Glen Browne played bass. Duane Stephenson (vocals), Deleon White (drums) and Dean Fraser on saxophone also worked on the mento song.
Last Friday, Gordon and his band, along with poets Joan Andrea Hutchinson and Yasus Afari and musician Rosina Moder, headlined the Celebrating Miss Lou show at the Redbones Blues Café in St Andrew.
Louise Bennett, who wrote countless culture sketches and performed in many pantomimes, died at her home in Toronto, Canada in July, 2006.
