After Friday evening's mishap at the Bushy Park race track in Barbados, Jamaica's David Summerbell Jr is hoping to correct his mechanical problems in time for today's clash between Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados, in the second leg of the Caribbean Circuit Racing Championship.
According to the president of the Jamaica Race drivers Club, Hillary Jardine, who is travelling with the Jamaican team, Summerbell broke the axle of his powerful Mitsubishi Evolution car during a practise session.
"His axle broke and the two front wheels just flew off," said Jardine, who further explained that the other members of the Jamaican team were in high spirits and ready for the competition.
Reports reaching Automotives are that the Guyanese had offered to assist Summerbell with parts and he should be good to go today.
Team
Commenting on the other members of the Jamaican team, Jardine said Gore's car was in such good shape that he took time out from the practise session on Friday. Jardine further stressed that new kid on the block, Christopher Campbell, was ready for the action. Campbell, who is from Manchester, was one of the top performers at the Dover race meet on August 3.
"My intentions are to bring back gold," said Doug Gore, who at present is third in the points standing behind Jamaica's David Summerbell and Guyana's Andrew King.
Summerbell and King
Only a mere point separates Summerbell and King, who are on 20 and 19 points, respectively. Reports are that King's car was in superb condition. Despite this, Gore believes that the very tight and challenging Barbados track could be a major obstacle to King.
"I am planning to keep the Jamaican flag flying high," said Summerbell, who has won the regional championship on one occasion.
The other members of the Jamaican team include Gary Williams of Team MoBay and Christopher Campbell.
The participating countries are Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname. The third and final leg of the championship is scheduled for November in Guyana.
"All we need to do today is to score enough points, because the track in Guyana more suits our cars, and once we dominate that meet, then the title is ours," Gore.
