Jamaica's 4x400-metre relay team shows off its bronze medals.

AFTER JAMAICA'S sensational gold rush over the last week of the Olympics, this achievement is paled somewhat in comparison.

However, the women's 4x400-metre team which garnered a bronze medal on the last day of track-and-field competition at the iconic 'Bird's Nest' stadium in Beijing is still a worthy recipient of The Gleaner's 'Performer of the Week' award.

Smarting for revenge in the mile relay after a shock bronze in the 400m final, American star Sanya Richards ran a superb final leg to overtake the Russian anchor runner and clinch gold for the United States.

perennially strong

The perennially strong Russians came in second for silver while the Jamaican quartet finished a distant but comfortable third to claim the country's 11th medal of the Games.

Shericka Williams, who claimed silver in the women's 400, got the ball rolling for Jamaica with a 50.88 split which saw the team in second behind the Russians at the first change.

Fastest leg

Shereefa Lloyd then ran the fastest leg for the Jamaicans (49.32) but lost ground to American Allyson Felix. Rosemarie Whyte ran a solid 50.34 but dropped further behind the Americans and Russians while Novlene Williams-Mills (49.86) brought the baton home safely.

Before the final, there had been talk that 400m hurdles gold medallist Melaine Walker could come into the team, but that never materialised.
