Usain Bolt celebrates after winning the 100 metres during the IAAF "Weltklasse Zurich" Golden League meeting at the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich, Switzerland, yesterday.
ZURICH, Switzerland (CMC):
Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt brought his mercurial talent to the Weltklasse Golden League meeting on Friday, sprinting to an easy victory in the 100 metres.
The 22-year-old, a triple gold medallist at the recently staged Beijing Olympics, clocked a swift 9.83 seconds to win handsomely ahead of American Walter Dix (9.99) and Trinidadian Richard Thompson (10.09).
In his first outing since his heroics in Beijing, which also included the coveted sprint double, Bolt was hardly troubled as he raced to victory before a capacity crowd at the Letzigrund Stadium.
"It was a good, nice track, great crowd," said Bolt, who was struggling with a cold.
"My start was not too good. I concentrated on winning and as I'm starting to get a cold I was not able to think about any faster time. My coach (Glen Mills) told me that I should make sure to end the season healthy."
Bolt, the world record-holder for the 100 metres and 200 metres, recovered from a poor start to easily overhaul his field. His reaction time was the slowest of the field, but he produced his usual mid-race burst to blast a field that also comprised the Netherland Antilles' Churandy Martina (fifth), Michael Frater (sixth) and the Trinidadian duo of Emmanuel Callander and Marc Burns, who were tied for seventh.
Other results
The Caribbean's success was limited, however. Bahamian Chris Brown was third in the 400 metres in 45.05 seconds behind winner Jeremy Wariner (43.82), who exacted revenge for his Olympic defeat to beat fellow American LaShawn Merritt (44.43), who finished second.
Jamaica's Danny McFarlane also claimed third in the 400 metres hurdles in a time of 48.40 seconds, following home Americans Angelo Taylor (48.07) and Kerron Clement (48.20).
The Caribbean went without success on the women's side with only Jamaica's Novlene Williams among the medals with bronze in the 400 metres. She clocked 50.78 seconds as American Sanya Richards won in 49.74 seconds.
Jamaicans Shericka Williams and Rosemarie Whyte were fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the 100 metres hurdles, Jamaicans Delloreen Ennis-London and Brigitte Foster-Hylton were fourth and eighth, as American LoLo Jones won in 12.56 seconds.
