Some houses flooded out in St Ann
In St Ann, several power lines were down and there were reports of some houses being flooded. According to Alvin Clarke, disaster coordinator for St Ann, "Up to this point, there is only one report of a section of a roof being damaged."
No problems in Montego Bay
From all accounts the St James Parish Council was ready for Gustav, which made landfall in Jamaica Thursday afternoon. Despite concerns raised earlier in the year, by disaster preparedness coordinator, Amanda Thompson, about citizens continuously dumping garbage in drains after they had been cleaned, the usual flood-prone areas were clear, allowing for the free flow of traffic in the city.
No signs of flooding in St Bess
Torrential rains and gusty winds were the only effects of Gustav in St Elizabeth as there were no signs of flooding in flood-prone areas.
Man breaks neck in fall from breadfruit tree
A Manchester man died under bizarre circumstances just prior to the passage of Gustav. Dead is 50-year-old George Martin of Main Street Porus in that parish.
