The Editor, Sir:Reference is made to the social housing programme that was initiated by then Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. The project was executed by the Ministry of Water and Housing and it was administered in a non-partisan, efficient, competent and professional manner. A substantial number of poor Jamaicans benefited.
grave political implications
Consequent on the change of Government, I am advised that the programme will now be done through the members of Parliament. I estimate that such a move will have grave political implications.
It is a fact when ordinary Jamaicans visit constituency offices, on both sides of the political fence, in search of social and economic aid, they are subjected to rigorous questions as to their political status. If they cannot explain to constituency staff, their demands are immediately turned down.
Fairness
In all fairness, however, MPs cannot monitor every activity in their offices.
I am urging the Government of Jamaica to revert the programme to the Ministry of Water and Housing and this should be done in the interest of impartiality and transparency.
