BATTERED! Gustav claims lives, leaves millions of dollars in damage
Jamaica has started what is expected to be a slow and costly recovery after Tropical Storm Gustav's destructive swathe across the island Thursday evening into last night.

Tears welled up in Paulette Phillips' eyes yesterday as she spoke of her partner who got washed away in the Murray Gully in Llandeway, St Thomas, during the onslaught of Gustav on Thursday.

Despite havoc most schools should reopen

Most schools across the island should reopen as scheduled next week, despite the devastating impact of Tropical Storm Gustav. Prime Minister Bruce Golding said yesterday that any delay in the reopening of schools should not be extended.

Gustav splits Harbour View bridge in two

The country's infrastructure had been at Tropical Storm Gustav's mercy since Thursday and he showed none. And so it was that the Hope River Bridge in Harbour View, popularly called the Harbour View bridge, the main access point for thousands of people commuting between Bull Bay, eastern Jamaica and the Corporate Area, was cut in two.

Ports islandwide reopen today

The Port Authority of Jamaica has advised all shipping agents, port operators and the general public that the Port of Kingston and all other ports around the island will be re-opened to shipping from 7 a.m.

Residents of McGregor, Burgher gullies hard hit

Shocked residents struggled to hold back the tears as they looked at what was left of their homes on the banks of the McGregor Gully in South East St Andrew yesterday morning. Metres away, on the bank of the Burgher Gully, it was a similar situation as residents reflected on the damage done by Tropical Storm Gustav.

St Catherine residents plead for help

Cries for food supplies, shelter and a dry place to sleep echoed throughout several communities in St Catherine after Tropical Storm Gustav caused severe flooding.
