Surprise gold puts Russia ahead
published: Saturday | August 23, 2008

The surprise gold for Russia in the 4x100 metres relay for women pushed it ahead of Jamaica in the athletics medal table going into today's final day of competition.

The Russians, who entered the final with the second-fastest time, (42.87) won the gold medal after favourites Jamaica (42.24) and Great Britain (43.02) failed to get the baton around.

But one more win for Jamaica in the final set of events today could put the island back on top and in charge.

When the athletes left the track yesterday, Russia had six gold, four silver and five bronze medals, while Jamaica had six gold, three silver and one bronze medal. The United States were third on this list despite securing the most track-and-field medals, 21. But with only five gold medals, the traditional powerhouse trailed Jamaica and Russia.

With all three countries looking for more medals today, Jamaica will need to win either of the two 4x400 relays to ensure that it tops the athletics medal table.
