New Kingston comes alive in celebration
published: Thursday | August 21, 2008

The mood was jubilant at Montego Bay's Pelican restaurant when Usain Bolt outclassed other athletes, taking home the 200-metre title in 19.30 seconds. - Photo by Janet Silvera

There was a roadblock on Knutsford Boulevard yesterday morning; not of tyres burning, but of staff members of business places along the party hip strip storming onto the boulevard, jumping, dancing and waving Jamaican flags, all in jubilation for Usain Bolt and Melaine Walker winning gold in record-breaking times in the 200 metres and 400 metres, respectively.

Employees of Jamaica National Building Society came out on the boulevard and distributed miniature flags.

Motorists slowed to collect flags and blew their horns. The sound of the horns excited the crowd, which began to grow.

Dancing in the sun

Short skirts, tight pants, stilettos and 'gentleman' boots danced in the morning sunlight on the hip strip.

Then they rocked and waved the black, green and gold flag, singing the national anthem, "Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, Land We Love".

Soon after, the anthem resonated in the street and taxi men at the intersection of Knutsford Boulevard and Trafalgar Road joined in with the choir.

They sang and rocked for more than 15 minutes, moving from the anthem to We are the Champions, then to a made-up tune, 'Black, Green and Gold'.
