Upholding principle
published: Wednesday | August 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

This is in response to the sports column by Paul-Andre Walker last Thursday.

Dear Mr Walker:

I wholeheartedly agree with your position on this issue. A policy is after all a policy and protocol should be supported especially by those who created it. If the country and, indeed, the athletes are to respect the national trials, principles have to stand.

I am a fan of Veronica Campbell-Brown, so you can imagine my disappointment when she failed to qualify for the 100 metres. But the fact is she didn't qualify.

Those who did qualify should all be allowed to represent Jamaica at the Olympics in the event (barring extenuating circumstances, of course).

Our word must mean something if people are to trust us. Our athletes have to earn the right to represent our country so that team spirit may flourish.

I am, etc.,

CLAUDINE MURRAY
