Has Phillips changed his outlook?
published: Wednesday | August 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am quite perturbed that the recent arguments put forward by People's National Party (PNP) presidential contender Dr Peter Phillips about the failure of our political system have not received the public scrutiny that it warrants.

Dr Phillips' realisation and acceptance of the fact that the crisis we now face in this country is a direct result of the failings of our political system and the lack of vision demonstrated by our political leaders is dead on target.

But isn't this the same Phillips that has been a part of our Jamaican political system for well over 30 years?

Hasn't Dr Phillips served at senior levels in government and wasn't he a Cabinet minister in the last PNP administration that held power for 18 years? What now has contributed to Dr Phillips' miraculous transformation? Has he recently been traversing the road to Damascus?

Nationalistic actions

If, in fact, it is that Dr. Phillips has had a genuine change in his outlook and his vision for a new Jamaica, then kudos to him. But the fact of the matter is that I highly doubt that any such transformation took place and suspect that this is just another election gimmick.

To restore Jamaica, we are going to need more than just pre-election and political-platform declarations.

What we need is nationalistic actions. We need patriotic leaders who are not afraid to make unpopular decisions - against party lines - in the interest of Jamaica. We need leaders who are genuinely going to put the people of Jamaica first.

I am, etc.,

A. GENIUS
