One day of 'good music'
published: Thursday | June 26, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

All I'm asking for is just one day, July 19. There are 366 days in this year, 366 days where all sorts of songs are played, and all I'm asking for is just one day to be dedicated to just 'good' music. 'Good' music includes any song that is not defined by a lewd content or one that promotes crime, violence and degrading women (including 'gyal' songs).

My petition, 'Righteous Rhythms: the Rebirth', seeks to have such a day in Jamaica, when only 'good' music is played. I'm not doing this to become known, but because I am fed up with the type of music that has become popular in our society, and so are others.

Change must occur

Many of our popular artistes have been banned from performing in some countries because of their lewd and violent lyrics, and it is amazing to see that we who produce these artistes have not put a strong foot down to show that some change must occur.

I don't blame the music of today for the negative societal changes, but it does play a part. I truly believe that my move against our type of music is a very positive one, and I hope that positive moves are still supported.

Last year, when I first did my 'Righteous Rhythms' petition, it wasn't fulfilled as it didn't receive the support and promotion that I thought it would. As a result, I let down the almost 1,000 persons who had signed and wanted to sign, but this year I don't wish for the same to happen.

Thank you for your time.

I am, etc,

VENESA WATSON
