THE EDITOR, Sir:
I couldn't help agreeing with the writer of the article, 'Bad precedent for Air Jamaica flight'. I had a similar experience last year (Labour Day weekend) when I boarded an Air Jamaica flight in Fort Lauderdale. The plane sat at the gate for 4 1/2 hours while the flight waited for two passengers who were late. When the passengers on board got upset and questioned the reason for waiting, we were told that the North America Air Jamaica authority instructed the pilots to wait for the passengers.
Apparently, a fight had broken out at the Air Jamaica desk at the terminal, which ended up delaying the remaining passengers. During this time, Spirit Airlines made two trips to Jamaica! No wonder Air Jamaica is bankrupt! How can you interrupt service and inconvenience other passengers for over four hours and be profitable in the process? Discount airlines like Spirit Airlines are into the business of making money, and would never do such a thing.
Whoever is making these decisions needs to be fired! These decisions are being made by high executives, so there needs to be a major overhaul of Air Jamaica management. Otherwise, divest the national airline and stop the money bleeding.
I am, etc.,
