The Editor, Sir:
In Jamaica today we have an escalating crime rate. There have been cries from certain sectors for the Government's plan. In addition, for each new minister of security there is high expectation that he will bring about a reduction in the crime level.
Lack of jobs
We need to move away from this mentality of one person or one group being responsible for solving the crime problem. In fact, the onus is on each and every citizen.
The problem will not be solved overnight; it is not only due to lack of jobs. The problem is multi-faceted and has its roots in a decline in social morals and ethics, lack of respect, discipline and lack of love.
Economic conditions may be a factor, but not the decisive factor. Our grandparents and their parents survived with much less than we have today, and yet never attacked each other as if there is some grand prize for the community with the most murders.
Missing key ingredient
Love ... Jamaica, that is what is missing, the key ingredient to our rebuilding of our nation. If love existed, one would not kill a man for stepping on his foot, nor kill another because he was offended by words uttered by the victim, nor drive on the roads as if life can be purchased at the nearest car parts dealer. Let us each take a stand and rebuild the love and discipline needed to move our country forward.
"Meanwhile these three remain, faith, hope and love; but the greatest of these is love." 1 Cor. ch13:13
