Checkpoints to control crime
published: Wednesday | May 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Gated communities is the proven way to control crime, ask any one of the gated communities if its crime rate is a problem. Ask Sandals, Superclubs, Half Moon et cetera. Half Moon has about 100 acres gated.

What do they all have in common? The main ones are: check points/barriers, all persons have name tags or wrist bands, security guards. To test this, start with geographically easy areas like Port Royal/Norman Manley Airport and Negril.

Checkpoints

Port Royal checkpoint at Harbour View roundabout. Negril two check points to Green Island and to Sav-la-Mar.

Everyone, residents, business owners and employees must be name-tagged like the prime minister suggested and they would be recognised and be able to pass through a resident line.

People just visiting for business/ pleasure must go through a sort of questionnaire showing ID and the like. Say a bus load of people, tourists or school kids etc; a list of names is submitted to the officers who just board the bus to spot check the numbers.

For those who think it is too many people, China has this system in Hong Kong, Gounzough and Sanchung to keep these areas from overcrowding.

I am, etc.,

MAVICK THINKER
