Double standards
published: Sunday | April 27, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It disturbs me that on the same day, there are two articles that are of major concern having different standards. One article mentions the "round table" talks between warring factions in the Kingston downtown area, and the other speaks to "arresting corrupt cops right away".

In my opinion, there is a double standard that exists here. If the ordinary citizen is caught breaking the law, the full arm of the law applies. He or she is taken into custody and charged, and then there is an investigation. There is no problem if a cop is suspected of being corrupt and investigated and then the necessary actions taken accordingly.

I have a serious problem when there is 'gang war' and the 'authorities' sit down with them to negotiate. This tells me that if one commits a crime, then he or she should be extended the courtesy of negotiation.

As far as I am concerned, these criminals are now 'above the law' and our 'authorities' have no control of the situation. There is no way we, as a people, can operate this way. What is good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Once a crime is committed and all investigations are complete, then the full arm of the law applies to all.

I am, etc.,
